Side-by-Side Installation Test: Stratlock Clips vs Z Clips

May 16, 2025

At Fastmount, we’re always looking for ways to make interior panel installation faster, easier, and more precise. In our latest YouTube video, we put our Stratlock® Rail System to the test against traditional Z clips in a side-by-side installation comparison.

Stratlock vs Z Clips: The Setup

  • We installed wall panels on a test wall using two different methods:
Left side: Fastmount Stratlock Rail System with Stratlock clips
    Right side: Traditional Z clips

It’s important to note that our certified builder Nick has never used either method before, so these times obviously may vary if you have experience with one method over the other.

The process was broken down into two main stages:

  1. Attaching rails to the wall
  2. Preparing and mounting the panels

Stage 1: Rail Installation
In the first stage, Z clips had a slight edge. Their simplicity allowed for a marginally quicker attachment of rails to the wall.

Stage 2: Panel Preparation and Installation
Once we moved on to preparing and installing the panels, the Stratlock system had a more streamlined process. Thanks to the precise alignment, tool-free engagement, and modular design of the Stratlock clips, panel installation was significantly quicker and more straightforward. In contrast, Z clips required careful alignment, manual measuring, and trial-and-error fitting. This not only slowed the process but also introduced more room for error.

The Hidden Time Cost: Rework
One major factor not captured in the raw timing is rework. With Z clips, it’s common to encounter misalignment that requires panels to be removed, adjusted, and reinstalled—sometimes multiple times. This can dramatically increase installation time and frustration. Stratlock’s self-aligning clips eliminate this issue, ensuring panels fit perfectly the first time, every time.
