One of the most common questions our team at Fastmount gets asked is, “Which clip range do I need for my project?” In this guide we explore the types of projects each range is suited to, with a closer look at our SLX Range, engineered for drywall applications.
What is the SLX Range and what makes it different?
The SLX Range was designed specifically for mounting panels into drywall and plywood substrates. The big differentiator is its two-stage engagement system, which gives you up to ¼” (6mm) of adjustability in any direction before the clip locks into its final position. That means you can fine tune panel placement without the rework.

When should I use SLX instead of another range?
SLX is the recommended choice for:
- Drywall installations: The SLX Range is purpose-built for drywall installations, with female clips that screw directly into the stud behind or use hollow wall anchors when you miss the stud. No other range handles drywall as cleanly.
- Complex geometries: The SLX Range is perfect for curved walls, feature ceilings, or any design where perfect alignment is critical and you can’t afford trial and error. The 360° adjustability makes tricky installs much more manageable.
- Large scale commercial fit outs: The SLX Range can be used for installs in hotels, offices, retail, healthcare, education to cater for large, expansive wall or ceiling areas where you want panels to sit consistently flush.
- Projects requiring fire compliance: The SLX Range has fire-rated versions of both male and female clips, meeting ASTM E119 testing standards. This is a must have for many commercial builds.
- Marine interiors: The SLX Range has a female clip (SLX-F40T) designed for plywood substrates used in marine environments, so the range covers boat interiors too.

What loads can the SLX Range handle?
Male clips are available in three load ratings:
- SLX-M5 — 5kg / 11lb pull-out load
- SLX-M10 — 10kg / 22lb pull-out load
- SLX-M18 / SLX-M18-FR — 18kg / 40lb pull-out load
- SLX-M25 — 25kg / 55lb pull-out load
How does installation work with the SLX Range? Do I need special tools?
No special tools are required when installing panels with the SLX Range. The female clips fix to drywall with standard #6 screws into the stud, or with hollow wall anchors when you’re between studs. Male clips attach to the panel face with screws or two-part epoxy adhesive.
SLX also includes two shim options — a 1/8″ red shim (SLX-SRR) and a 3/64″ blue shim (SLX-SBR) — to help pack up the wall and get all your clips on the same plane before you start hanging panels. This is especially useful on walls that aren’t perfectly flat.
Installation guides, data sheets, and video tutorials can be found in the Technical Resource Library.
Can panels be removed in any order when using the SLX Range?
Yes, panels mounted with SLX clips can be removed in any sequence, without disturbing adjacent panels. That’s especially advantageous on large walls where you might need access to services behind a specific panel, or where a single panel needs replacing down the track.

Is the SLX Range available to buy in the US?
Yes, US architectural customers can purchase directly through the Fastmount online store. For project-specific guidance, get in touch with the team.
How does SLX compare to other ranges?
Here’s a quick overview of where everything else fits:
Standard Range (PC): Great for general panel installations onto a wide variety of substrates where you don’t need the drywall-specific engineering of SLX. Multiple fixing options (self-tapping, screw, adhesive), with pull-out loads of 5–15kg (11–33lb). Learn more about the Standard Range
Low Profile Range (LP): Useful when the space between the panel and substrate is tight. These clips sit much shallower than Standard, making them ideal for lightweight panels, curved substrates, and upholstered panel work. Pull-out loads of 5–15kg (11–33lb). Learn more about the Low Profile Range
Very Low Profile Range (VL): Ultra-slim fixing for thin panels where even LP is too deep. Creates just a 3mm (⅛”) gap between the panel and wall. Pull-out loads of 5–10kg (11–22lb). Fire-rated options also available. Learn more about the Very Low Profile Range
Stratlock® Range: Great when you need maximum strength. The Stratlock® Rail System delivers the highest shear strength and pull-out loads (up to 18kg / 40lb) in the Fastmount lineup, with 360° adjustment and quick-release functionality. Built for the heaviest panels in the most demanding environments. Learn more about the Stratlock® Range
Metal Range (MC): Heavy-duty and fire-resistant metal clips for applications where plastic clips aren’t appropriate. Pull-out loads up to 10kg (22lb) depending on the female clip selected. Learn more about the Metal Range
Textile Range (TC): Specifically for securing cushions and upholstered panels to hard surfaces. Handles up to 32kg (70lb) breakout load and works in interior and exterior environments including marine installations. Learn more about the Textile Range
